External HDD not recognized - my old external HDD is not recognized by my computer, whenever I plug it in, the computer hangs. The same thing happens with different computers as well. It is a Iomega 160 GB external HDD, inside is a WD 5400 drive. Is there any way to try and retrieve the data on the disk?

It sounds like the disk is failing , Do not keep attempting to initiate the external drive as you may need to recover the files before the disk fails. You most likely need send your drive to a reasonable recovery place since it freezes any machine and you will not be able to use retail Data recovery software. I recommend a company called Data Doctors: www.thedatadoctors.net . They have reasonable prices with nationwide shipping.
