I’m in Mexico and using a 2Wire dsl modem. It’s called 2Wire because the phone line is only two wires, not like I had in he states where my phone line was 4 wires. The question is: can I use an old 4 wire [dsl] moden that I have in the states to plug into the 2 wire phone line here? Will it work? Thanks for any info.

Mexicodenis, the short answer to your question is, “It Depends”. You see there are so many flavors of DSL around that only the DSL providers themselves will know which modems work with their systems. So If I were you I’d start by giving my DSL provider a call and asking them about the particular modem you have and if it is compatible.
Generally speaking most DSL runs off of 2 wires to begin with. So even if you have 4 wires in your phone line your DSL modem will only use 2. It wouldn’t hurt to give the modem a try.
Now keep in mind, many DSL companies use some sort of PPoE connection. What this means is that you need some sort of software that will transmit your user name and password to the DSL company so that you can log on to their system. Now this requires you to have a user name and password assigned to you by the DSL company. If you don’t have one, just give them a call and I’m sure they assign you one.
Finally, once you have your user name and password, you may need a 3rd party piece of software OR you might be able to use Microsoft’s DUN (dial up networking) client. If this is the a case you can go into the Control Panel and from the network settings button, you should be able to add a “new connection”. The wizard will prompt you for all the information and then attempt to connect.
