how do you set up a raid on a computer?

ANSWER: Setting up a RAID system on a computer is not a simple task. Even if done right, it takes lots of "Know How" to setup and configure. If anything ever goes wrong, it takes more "know how" to restore the data (depending on what type of RAID you use). If you must have RAID for performance (striping), then you must start with a RAID Mother Board: http://tinyurl.com/5aow56

Or at least a RAID Card for you PC. Then you need RAID Software to configure the card or PC (Usually comes with the card or motherboard).

But the simplest way to do it is to get an external RAID enclosure and drop in your drives and you're off and running. You can go with something like this: http://tinyurl.com/5zqngq

or something more "robust": http://tinyurl.com/5qg6hc

Either way, RAID can be tough. My personal all tiem favorite "RAID" like device is the Drobo: http://tinyurl.com/6q5kh8

It is easier to use/setup than RAID, and is more reliable. Plus you don't need all drives of the same size. As you get new drives, you can swap out the smallest drive and you wont loose any data. With RAID you need all the same size drives. So to increase capacity you'll have to buy all new drives. With DROBO you just add a new larger drive and no problems.
