“it crashed for no apparent reason and now my disk drive won’t work ”
well it seems that you’re facing the error …missing OS
well in that case, i have faced the same prob over and over again in vista ( i am running win 7 now). it seems that you’ll have to format your C: drive and install a fresh copy of windows, the prob you face maybe because of a virus or due t corrupted registry. and to avoid further probs try these
1. never manually reboot the system until its the last resort
2. if the system crashes on its own , it may be the work of a virus
3. check if your system is able to exceed the min req to run the software you are trying to install
4. update your virus def. and windows as regularly as you can ( min. 6hrs gap)
5. dont istall sharewares unless you are sure that its a trusted software and you are downloading it from a reliable source
hope that this helps….
cheers

Okay, first of all, you need to reboot into Safe mode. Read Vista users to know how to;http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsaf…
Make sure you reboot into Safe mode, with networking, so you can use the internet, then log on.
Scan your computer for viruses, etc with this website here, free online scan;http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download Spybot S&Dhttp://www.safer-networking.org
Superantispyware;http://www.superantispyware.com [Free version]
Scan your computer with all of these programmes! Go onto http://www.download.com and type in ‘avast! anti-virus home edition’
Afterwards^^ do NOT use Norton.

Some windows pcs dont come with discs, heres what to do. Turn off your pc and wait 5 seconds then turn it on again. Put your finger on the F11 key and be ready to push it when the screen says to as you will only get about 2 or 3 seconds to do it, if you are too slow try again. It will say total restore, click that and follow directions. When finished It will be like new, your pics will be lost but your pc will work and it wont be slow or filled with junk files and all virus’s will be gone.

update all drivers via microsoft’s website and the manufacturer of your machine, if the drive just stopped working it is likely just a driver problem.
you can download a trial copy of norton’s but you are out on office.
