How To Fix A Computer That Won’t Go Past The Startup Screen?
Categories: hardware
Written By: admin
My computer only shows one screen, the start-up screen. It’s a HP Windows vista. The screen it shows is powder blue with the words HP. At the bottom it gives directions of keys to press on the keyboard to fix it. I’ve tried unplugging it, using different keyboards and mouses, nothing works.

The best option you should try is to re-install windows using the disk (If you have one), or trying to re-install using the secondary partition, and see if that fixes your problem…. Another option is to attempt to get into the BIOS and choose ‘Default’ configuration, and see if that helps. If these two options don’t work, you may need to take it in to get repaired, BUT I would avoid that until all other options are exhausted, due to the possibility of the problem being minor (Which I almost can guarantee it), avoid spending the money for a shop to charge you over $100 just to re-install windows or tweak your BIOS or something simple like that. Talk to your Friendly Neighborhood Geek that can take a look at the computer first-hand, and I bet he’ll fix it for you!

Have you tried starting the computer first in Safe Mode?
Hit F8 constantly while the computer is restarting.
You should get a menu with Safe Mode options.
Try normal safe mode first to see if the machine gets past the start-up screen.
If it does you then can shut down and come back up with safe mode with networking.
Then I would start a chat session with HP and see if they can help further if the machine is still under warranty.
If not then under safe mode run a good virus scan
maybe AntiVir,Avast,Norton, McAfee or AVg Free
whatever you have
Download Spybot 1.6 and do a full spyware scan
Let both tools clean any virus or spyware.
Then try to come up normally.
If it still fails go back to safe mode
and do a system restore to a day before you started to have this problem.
Good luck

that’s really bad and hard to fix
but press f12 or f11 or f8 or whatever they tell you to press to enter “Setup”
when you enter press the right arrow til you see something that has to do with boot device list. change the boot order to hard drive first for sure.
that would be the best way if there is a problem
also check and make sure that you don’t have a floppy drive in the computer, sometimes it has an autorun and messes up the startup
if that doesnt work just call the company and ask them. im not too good with hp computers and vista. hate them both haha

when it starts up press and hold the F8 key and start it up in safe mode, and then do system restore
some computers you will press and hold the delete key, but I think all the newer ones you press and hold the F8 key

Turn on the PC while continously pushing F-8 to force Safe Mode.
If it boots in safe mode then hit the START button then select the RUN box. Type MSCONFIG and hit ENTER. When the box comes up click on SYSTEM RESTORE. Follow the steps.
