just installed new HDD, use recovery CD/DVD to install factory setting (like brand new) for your laptop.
No setting required for installing new HDD, plug and go

I believe you can have an OS on the external hard drive, but you need one on the internal hard drive too.
(That’s so people can dual-boot multiple OS’s)

you need an internal hd to install OS on it.
external is for back up thing.
